  4. The error showed up as "path not found" or "missing protocol" , or as a "Winsock" issue.

Once I disabled the digitally sign communications, I was able to connect to my NAS. When you are on the services applet make sure the service "Workstation" is running and is set to start atomatically. The other account could not access the NAS drive. I updated mine and I'm finally back in good business. This can be found in other threads. I could see the NAS on the network but got the error that I didn't have permissions to connect. I also cannot see shared folders on the friends laptop.
